Trenton Cold Storage

The Trenton Cold Storage Story
Trenton Cold Storage warehouse circu 1910From it’s inception by founder Eben James I in 1902 to the present day, Trenton Cold Storage has operated with a vision for the future.

Arriving in Trenton, he found the region surrounding the Trent River and the Bay of Quinte a ready source of high quality apples to export back to England. The surrounding regions of Northumberland and Prince Edward County produced large quantities of the best apples grown in North America and Trenton's proximity to Lake Ontario provided easy access to the St. Lawrence waterway.  At that time, fresh fruit from local farms was brought in, packed in barrels, and shipped by water to Montreal. The spot was perfectly positioned for transport.

Head Office Trenton Cold Storage historical photoThis proved especially fortuitous when war broke out in 1939.  Trenton Cold Storage was situated within a short distance to rail lines and waterways and had a half-century of experience shipping to Europe. This put Trenton Cold Storage in a unique position to contribute to Canada’s war effort.

Eben’s location was so well chosen, it is still in service today as Trenton Cold Storage’s head office.  It is now a fully modernized, 72,000 square foot freezer, and it also serves as a production facility for two of North America's largest food and beverage producers. TCS is still owned and operated by the James family and it is the 3rd largest full service refrigerated warehousing and distribution company in Canada. With 7 facilities in Ontario and Alberta, Trenton Cold Storage supplies more than 20 million cubic feet of temperature controlled warehouse space.

Excellence demands the ability to embrace new techniques, technologies and opportunities. The James’ have always been pioneers in the cold storage industry, being among the first to offer flash freezing and dehydration.  Sensing the need for diversity as the markets exploded in the 50’s, Trenton Cold Storage expanded its vegetable operations and began to store product for major manufactures.
